THE STORY

A man from Nazareth
walked into the Jordan.

In the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar, John was in the wilderness, calling Israel to repentance and baptizing in the river that splits the land. Crowds came from Jerusalem and the Jordan valley. Then Jesus came — not as a preacher yet, but as one among the people.

He had no sin to confess. He entered the water to stand with those who did. As He rose, the Spirit descended, and the Father named Him. The hidden years of Nazareth ended. The public life of the Messiah began.

The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John all pause at this river. Two thousand years later, the Church still returns to it — in baptismal fonts, in pilgrimage, and, in 2030, in a worldwide remembrance of that hour.

    The baptism

    Jesus comes from Nazareth of Galilee to John at the Jordan. The Trinity is revealed: the Son in the water, the Spirit as a dove, the Father’s voice from heaven.

    The ministry

    From this river the Gospel moves into Galilee and Judea. The baptism is not an ending. It is the first public sign.

  3. 2030

    Two millennia

    A generation stands at the same water and remembers the hour when the heavens opened — a jubilee of beginning.

THE PLACE

Al-Maghtas,
Bethany beyond the Jordan.

On the eastern bank, opposite Jericho, the river is narrow and the desert is close. Early Christians identified this stretch as the place of the baptism — Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing (John 1:28).

Today the site is known as Al-Maghtas, a UNESCO World Heritage place in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Churches of many traditions stand near the water. Pilgrims still step down to the same river.

THE YEAR

2030 — two thousand years from the river.

Most historians place the baptism of Jesus around the years 28 to 30. The year 2030 therefore stands as a bimillennial threshold: not a museum date, but a living invitation to return to the water where the Father, the Son, and the Spirit were made known.

Pilgrimage

Prayer

Churches across the world may keep 2030 as a year of baptismal memory — fonts, catechesis, and the feast of the Theophany.

Peace

The Jordan still draws people from many nations. To gather here is to pray for the peace of the land where Christ was named.
